A mission is a task members complete to earn points, involving actions like posting, commenting, or submitting screenshots. Missions can be unique or recurring and may target specific members based on roles or statuses.
Types of missions available
Unique missions: these missions can only be done once, meaning members will only win points for that mission once. They can require members to:
- Submit a screenshot (follow the brand on Instagram, read a blog post…)
- Complete a set of actions (like and comment a post)
- Complete one action (fill in your Instagram handle on your profile)
Recurring/all-time missions: the fun never ends with these! Members can complete them as much as they want! Be careful to set up recurring missions that are not too easy to avoid giving members points too easily (ie of don’t give 20 points each time a member shares a post on the community). These can be:
- Points for each of their post that is validated
- Points for each of their comment that is validated
- Points whevener they complete a product testing
- Submitting a screenshot (ie text message sent to your friend to invite them on the community, post on a specific topic, etc)
External actions : (need help from your CSM to set these up)
- Track Instagram or TikTok posts with a specific #
- Track reviews left by your community members (if you’re integrated with a review provider, i.e. BazaarVoice, Yotpo, Power Reviews etc.)
Targeted missions : Visible only for specific users (based on statuses, roles or answers to custom fields) - for unique missions only.
How to create a mission
- Go to Gamification, Missions, then Add a mission
-
Fill in the main info section
Title: Try to keep it short as it will be cut off after 2-lines length
Description: Add a description to explain what members will have to do to complete the mission and any useful information
Reward: if you want to reward members for completing a mission, you can add it here. You will then have to export members who completed that mission and contact them separately about the reward. This field can also be used to add more details (limited-time mission, bonus points…).
Image URL: Choose an image to go with your mission
Nb of points to earn: Select a number of points associated with the mission’s completion. The more important the mission, the more points we recommend giving. Note: if you don't want members to earn points for a mission, enter “0” in this box - Select your conditions
Conditions are the different actions that have to be done to complete the mission.
👉If one of those conditions is not fullfiled, the user will not be able to receive their points.
👉For mission requiring a specific number of actions (e.g. comment 5 posts) always select GreaterThanOrEqual - Set up a start and end date for your mission (optional - only works for unique missions)
You can now plan ahead when you want missions to go live or be removed from your community by selecting a start date and/or an end date to your missions to animate your community - for unique missions only.
If a mission is set with a specific end date, it will automatically be removed from the platform, but it will still be visible in the backend, you will have to manually remove it from there.
Please note it will not be possible to recover this mission, you will have to create a new one.
Missions with a Start and End Date
Here are some practical cases for displaying missions on the community side that have a start and an end date:
Case 1: Condition A has no start date but has an end date → The mission is displayed as soon as it is created and remains visible only if the user has completed Condition A before the end date. Otherwise, it disappears from the list.
Case 2: Condition A has a start date but no end date → The mission is displayed from the start date of Condition A and remains always visible.
Case 3: Condition A has both a start and an end date → The mission is displayed from the start date of Condition A and remains visible only if the user has completed Condition A before the end date. Otherwise, it disappears from the list.
Case 4: Condition A has a start date but no end date + Condition B has neither a start nor an end date → The mission is displayed from the start date of Condition A and remains always visible.
Case 5: Condition A has a start date but no end date + Condition B has no start date but has an end date → The mission is displayed from the start date of Condition A and remains visible after the end date of Condition B only if the user has completed Condition B. In this case, it is no longer displayed to other users.
Case 6: Condition A has both a start and an end date + Condition B has no start date but has an end date → The mission is displayed from the start date of Condition A and remains visible after the latest end date of the two conditions, provided that the user has completed both. It disappears for all users who have not fulfilled both conditions before their respective end dates.
Case 7: Condition A has both a start and an end date + Condition B has both a start and an end date → The mission is displayed from the earliest start date between the two conditions and remains visible after the latest end date of the two, if the user has completed both conditions. It disappears for all users who have not completed them within the given deadlines.
How to organise your missions on he back-end
You can organize your missions into sections to keep everything tidy and easy to find. Here's how to do it:
- Create a Section: Click the "+" icon located at the bottom left of any mission.
- Move Missions: To place a mission into a section, hover your mouse over the dots next to the mission. When the cursor changes to a hand, click and drag the mission into the desired section.
This way, you can easily group and reorganize your missions as needed.

- Go to the Config section
- Then Gamification
- And Missions
- Click ‘Edit’ on the mission of your choice
You can edit the title, description, and number of points only, but not the condition. If you’ve made a mistake, please delete your mission and create it again.
No, you can’t. For technical reasons, you can only update the main info (title, description, icon, number of points, reward…). However, to avoid confusion for your members, we recommend creating a new mission instead of modifying the existing condition.
We can delete a mission anytime, but please note this is a ‘soft delete,’ allowing you to recover the mission later by simply clicking ‘Delete’.
When you delete a mission, it is not visible on the platform anymore, but its data still remains in the backend in the Analytics section. This data allows you to use it in reports to compare with future missions.
Next to ‘Add a mission,’ click on ‘Show disabled missions.’
The deleted missions will show up in the list. Click the orange button to recover the mission of your choice.
👉You won’t be able to recover a mission that was created with a specific ending date.
To highlight a new mission, in addition to letting members know it’s available (in a post, via email…), you can:
- Put it in a dedicated section (e.g. ‘Monthly Exclusive Missions’)
- Put the name in square brackets.
- First, create an external action:
1. Go to the Config section Gamification External actions.
2. Click on “add an external action.”
3. Enter the name of the external action (e.g. “sephoracommunity”). Avoid special characters or spaces.
4. Choose the action type: “SocialPostInstagramHashtag” for Instagram or “SocialPostTikTokHashtag” for TikTok.
5. Tick “Is Client ID unique” and untick “Can be called publicly.” - Next, create the mission, select the “External action” condition, and specify how many posts members need to share to get their points.
👉Remember to click “Create this mission” once done.
- Go to the Config section Look & Feel Images.
- Upload your image and copy the URL from the top right corner.
- Go to the mission’s description and click the image icon.
- Paste the URL and click “OK.”
👉Remember to click the “Update this mission” button once you’re done.
