A social mission is an external gamification action designed to engage your community on social platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
Create a social mission
A social mission invites users to post on Instagram, TikTok and/or YouTube using a specific hashtag, then rewards them with points or progression within the community. Follow these steps:
First, set up the External action:
In Configuration > Gamification > External actions, click on the + Add an external action button.
Choose the action type (Instagram, TikTok or YouTube). You can create one on each platform for the same type of mission.
Enter the hashtag that users must use in their posts (without the #) then click on Create.
Then, link it to a Mission:
In Configuration > Gamification > Missions, click on the + Add a mission
Once all required fields are filled in, in conditions, choose External Action
Select the external action you previously created from the list
- You can also choose a targeting condition: Has a linked Instagram/TikTok/YouTube account
Choose how many posts with this hashtag a member must publish, or set it as recurring
-
Optional: you can define a period during which you want users to use the hashtag
Reminder: the end date is set by default to one month.
If the mission starts as soon as it is created, it is recommended to remove the default date (creation date). This is particularly important if conditions are linked to roles or custom fields.
Using those targeting conditions:
- Reduce frustration by hiding missions that require unlinked social accounts
- Improve engagement and completion rates by showing more relevant missions
- Maximize impact by highlighting missions that users can actually complete
This works whether social authentication is enabled or not:
- If a social-authentication custom field is configured, the rule uses that field
- Otherwise, it uses the platform’s special-use custom field
What users need to do
Once the mission has been posted and members wish to take part, here's what they need to do to participate:
Post on Instagram, TikTok and/or YouTube with the required hashtag you set for the mission
Go to the mission page on their profile, and click on the button to validate the mission (by default, this button shows "Done! Check my profile!" but it can be custom-labeled):
The button is disabled for 5 minutes when clicked, this is the delay for post retrieving. However, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube are separated: users can click on the button for each at different times, on the same day.
There’s an automatic moderation system on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube that doesn’t validate posts immediately after they’re published, it can take up to 5 minutes for a post to be approved. That's why we recommend asking users to wait 5 minutes after publication before clicking the button.
If users click the button immediately, Instagram, TikTok or YouTube may not yet have fully validated the post so the mission can be invalidated. They can always try again when the button becomes available.
Mission validation
We use a tool which allows us to automatically search on Instagram, Youtube and/or TikTok to see if the user has posted content using the specific hashtag. This action is called "post retrieving".
How does it work?
When users click on the mission page to validate their participation, the "post retrieving" automatically search for their most recent posts with the required hashtag. This will validate the users who have actually participated in the mission, so that they can be rewarded.
How to check if a user completed the mission?
If a user contacts you because they haven't been rewarded for the mission, you can easily check whether they've posted with the required hashtag thanks to this checklist.
To avoid mistakes or requests from users who have not been rewarded, here are the points to watch out for:
- Hashtags must not contain accents or special characters.
- The user must not do a typo on the hashtag, so that post retrieving can identify it.
- The user's Instagram, Youtube and/or TikTok account(s) must be public.
- The user must have correctly entered their Instagram, Youtube and/or TikTok handle on the community before posting, this is the account for which the post retrieving refers to.
Points can take up to 24 hours to get credited on the user's account.
