Moderation helps maintain a safe and pleasant space for members. Let’s see how to manage flagged content, moderate users, and use auto-moderation.
For recommendations on organization, the time to spend on moderation and daily best practices, also see our moderator guide.
How it works
Communities are partly self-regulated thanks to members. Each member can report inappropriate content (posts and comments), and report a user if their behavior is causing problems. They then play an important role in keeping community spaces safe.
To report a post, simply click the three dots at the top right of the post or comment, then click Report (or Report).
Once reported, the content is sent to the moderation channel, visible only to authorized admins. This channel is located on the community side, not in the back office.
By default, a standard rule applies: if content receives 2 reports, it is automatically hidden from the community.
This threshold can be changed in Configuration > Channels > Edit button of the relevant channel. In Advanced settings, you can change the number of Flags to auto-moderate.
Moderate reported content
When content is reported, it appears in the moderation channel. Authorized admins who can access it on the community side can then review the content and choose the most suitable action depending on the context.
Before making a decision, check:
- The content of the post or comment
- The number of reports received
- The publication context
- The member’s history if needed
Manage reported content
In the moderation channel on the community > Flagged posts, click the three dots at the top right of the content under moderation, then select the desired action:
- Validate post : Display the mention Approved by an admin on the content. It will become visible again in the community. This action should be used sparingly, to highlight high-quality content.
- Delete flags : Remove the reports related to the content. It will become visible again in the community.
- Delete post : Delete the post from the community if the content is truly considered inappropriate or against the community rules.
Some use cases:
A member reports content that is not actually a problem. After checking, the admin can choose not to apply any removal and restore the visibility of the content if needed (Delete flags).
A post receives several reports because it is inappropriate. The admin checks the content in the moderation channel and decides to delete it to preserve the community space (Delete post).
A comment may seem problematic without clearly violating the rules. In this case, it is useful to look at the overall context before deciding, rather than relying only on the report.
Manage deleted content
In the moderation channel on the community > Deleted posts, you can view deleted content.
If the content was deleted by mistake and you want it to be visible again on the community, you can click the three dots at the top right of the content > Resuscitate.
Auto-moderation
In addition to manual reporting, the platform provides auto-moderation tools to limit the publication of inappropriate content.
AI Moderation Assistant
The AI Moderation Assistant helps moderators identify potentially sensitive content faster. It automatically analyzes posts, comments, and images published on the community to highlight content that presents a potential risk.
Its role is to:
- Reduce the time spent on daily moderation tasks
- Help prioritize the most sensitive content
- Limit members’ exposure to harmful content
The AI Moderation Assistant does not make any moderation decision automatically. It is only used as an analysis and prioritization aid. Final decisions always remain manual.
See this article to learn more about using the AI Moderation Assistant.
Forbidden words
Another auto-moderation feature is the banned words list. It makes it possible to prevent the publication of content containing terms considered inappropriate or risky.
When a member publishes a post or comment containing a word from this list, the publication is blocked and the member sees a window prompting them to edit their message.
To learn how to edit your banned words list, see this article.
Some forbidden words can also concern fragments used in links or code. They also contribute to the security of the platform.
Moderate a user
Moderation does not only concern content, it can also apply to a user’s behavior. If a member adopts inappropriate behavior in the public space or in private messages, they can be reported so admins can take action.
To moderate a user, go to their public profile, click the three dots at the top right, then choose the desired action (Report, Block, Ban or Delete).
User blocking
When members do not get along, it is useful to remind them that they can use the blocking feature. When a user blocks another user:
- They no longer see that user’s content
- They can no longer interact with each other
- Other members can continue to see the blocked user’s content
Blocking is therefore a preventive solution that is useful when the problem concerns the relationship between two members.
Report a user
If a member notices inappropriate behavior, they can report the user so admins can review the situation in the moderation channel > Flagged users.
Such a report may concern:
- Aggressive behavior
- Harassment
- Spam
- Inappropriate private messages
- Repeated content that goes against the community rules
Ban a user
A ban is a strong measure. When a user is banned:
- They are logged out of their account and can no longer sign back in
- Their IP address is blacklisted
- They therefore cannot easily create a new account with another email address
Content associated with a banned user remains visible in the community, but their username and all profile information are deleted. The profile is anonymized.
In the back office, a record is kept of the ban (person who banned, banned person, date, reason)
Delete a user
Deleting a user should be reserved for the most serious cases (for example: massive spam, violence, nudity, clearly inappropriate or dangerous content). In this type of situation, it is recommended to ban the user AND delete all associated data.
This way:
- Their content is no longer visible to other members
- The data is still kept in the database
- The deletion date and the person who deleted the user are not recorded in the database
